From the late 1700's to the 1880's before the invention of phonograph's and radio's Americans learned the newest songs from printed song sheets. These are not sheet music song sheets are single printed sheets usually six by eight inches with lyrics but no music. These were the newest songs of their time being sung in music halls or they were new lyrics to familiar songs like "Yankee Doodle" or "The Last Rose of Summer." Some of the most beloved American tunes were printed as song sheets including "The Star Spangled Banner" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic." These Song sheets offer us a unique perspective on the political social and economic life of the time especially during the Civil War. Some are dramatic some are humorous. Also included are a small collection of British song sheets. The majority of this collection were printed from the 1850s to the 1870s.
